What we do

At NTU LangDoc, we share a passion for recording and analyzing under-documented languages in their cultural settings. Faculty members, postgraduates, senior undergraduates and visiting academics study languages in and around Singapore, with a focus on Northeast India and Eastern Indonesia. The major research focus of this lab is to document the linguistic and cultural diversity of the region using digital technologies to record and preserve it for posterity. The primary data we collect provide a solid empirical foundation to address issues in linguistics such as typology, multilingualism, language contact, historical-comparative linguistics, and many other topics in the discipline.

Undergraduates are also actively encouraged to explore the area of field linguistics and some have collected interesting data right from their "backyard" of Singapore. Click each of the links to learn more about the grants we have been awarded and some featured student projects.
